The Bristol Pain Relief Centre

The Bristol Pain Relief Centre offers a Medical, Physiotherapeutic and Psychological approach to medically inexplicable pain.

Who are we?

  • GP - Dr Don Grant
  • Physiotherapist - Matt Kinal
  • Psychotherapist - Tania Blom

We have a special interest in those patients that feel abandoned by the medical fraternity and are exhausted from the continuous search for damaged or malfunctioning physiology.

At the Bristol Pain Relief Centre we understand that the symptoms you are having are REAL and that they are not in your head. Together we work across specialities to offer you a multi-disciplinary solution.

“Every ‘medically explained’ symptom had an unexplained counterpart, and every medical speciality has it’s own unexplained syndromes” according to Brown R.J.(2007), (Clinical Psychology Review: Introduction to the special issue on medically unexplained symptoms).

You are not alone with this.

  • Tension Headaches
  • Migrane Headaches
  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain, Whiplash, Fibromyalgia
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Insomnia
  • Tinnitus
  • Chronic abdominal or pelvic pain …

are just some of the symptoms that are often both chronic and seemingly medically inexplicable. It is these patients that can feel poorly understood and find it difficult to receive treatment within primary care.

It is well documented that pain, the experiences of an individual and the level of coping with pain, have an emotional component. My aim is to explore this with you through regular sessions and to work with you by providing you with some strategies and tools to reduce your pain level and the affect pain has in your life. This does not mean that your pain is not real or that you are not feeling pain physically. Symptoms are the body’s way of communicating and therapy will help provide you with the feedback to understand this pain better. Bristol Pain Relief Centre will help you to steer your way through your pain problem until you reach a point where you can let go of pain and lead a more fulfilling life.

Patients can be self-referred or GP referred, usually with pain lasting for longer than six weeks. It is down to the clinician’s discretion as to whether someone is accepted onto the programme.

I never believed that I could ever like myself deep down as I was taught to be worthless by an early age, but seeing Tania has changed that...
